The tennis necklace originated in 1987, during the US Open when professional tennis player Chris Evert was playing a match.

During her match, she realized that her diamond bracelet had fallen off her wrist and onto the court, causing a brief interruption in play as she searched for it.

This incident led to the creation of the tennis necklace. Designer George Bedewi created a flexible diamond bracelet that would fasten securely on the wrist to prevent any accidental loss during play.
